Illinois Pictures by Canonet QL17 G-III #1

Back again from an unscheduled absence. Seductive passions have been stirring recently inside me and well… suffice to say that I’ve had a lot on my mind lately. It’s hard to deal with several obsessive hobbies and impossible to give up either of them.

Having said all this, I’ve discovered enough time to snap a few more photos with my old Canonet QL17 G-III rangefinder camera. I finally finished my 4th roll of film, after more than 3 months. In the meantime I also bought my own scanner, a cheap Canon, which however gives quite decent results.

I’ve decided to start a new perpetual series with photos taken with the Canonet QL17 G-III. The particular thing about this series is that the photos are in most part unrelated to each other. I do try to carry the Canonet with me all the time but most of my time is spent going to and from work, so photos are usually taken every once in a while. A snap here, another one there. Be warned :) Ah, unless specified otherwise, all photos are taken in Illinois, in and around Chicago.

To start off the series, this is one of my favorites. A picture taken on a very snowy December day, down the road I live on. It wasn’t a very nice day. Because of the heavy snow, I missed work and my car developed a rather embarrassing condition. While missing work isn’t such a great deal, my car’s condition keeps giving me grief.

Yeah, I know: this next photo sucks. How dare I post such a photo? Didn’t I notice the very obvious dark band crossing almost half the picture? Well, I admit, it is a rather compromised picture. Still, I shot it through a chain-link fence and the dark band is part of that fence. I rather like the dilapidated buildings behind the fence so I thought I would post this one, with all the risk of negative critique.

Here’s a view along a typical Chicago street, this one called Fullerton. Notice the muddy snow on the sidewalk.

A bunch of orange traffic cones in a parking lot. The bright saturated color contrasts nicely with the overcast day.

I converted this one to a sepia-like tone. The original’s colors were a bit messed up by the interior lights and they weren’t giving any relevant information anyway. The conversion gives it a very old appearance in my opinion. The scene was shot from a table in a Thai restaurant.

Finally, this photo shows a bunch of neatly stacked carts at a Dominick’s store. This is one of those photos which shows off the extended dynamic range of film, even in the case of crappy film like I use. I love film!
