Chicago Nightlife - Part 1

I have finally come around to sharing a few of the photographs I took one night in Chicago. The rather “unusual” thing about this series is that they are part of the first roll of film taken with my Canonet QL17 G-III. I used a Fuji Super HQ 200 film to shoot these images. The camera handled itself quite well considering the lighting conditions. I am only posting what I feel to be the best of the first roll.

On this particular occasion I was riding the train to downtown Chicago to watch the lighting of the Christmas… lights. I didn’t make it on time but at least I managed to shoot these photos.

This is what a typical Chicago street looks at night. Quite deserted. Of course, it wasn’t the heart of downtown either.

I saw these colorful figurines in a Chinese shop window and I just had to take a snap. Unfortunately the beard of the rightmost figurine is slightly overexposed.

I passed a deserted and quite creepy back alley and I took a few moments to take a shot. I wished I had more time to explore said alley.

The subway entrance was situated below a bridge over which the train passed and a car had entered the frame just before I took the picture. I have several hand-held shots at 1/15s - 1/30s which look very decent.

Inside the subway station, after I had passed the sleeping attendants and a crazy bum who was singing some garbage, I took a shot of the “Chicago” lettering on the tile wall. Just to prove I was on location :)

Finally, this is how people get off a subway :) At that late hour there were only a couple of people riding the train. I find these narrow platforms unnerving…
