Chicago Botanical Gardens, Take 2

I just read an article in an auto magazine about an ex-hotshot guy who was Director of the CIA at one point in his career. You know, the type who thinks that bombing Iran and Syria is the only way to go. What has this got to do with the Chicago Botanical Gardens? Though it may not be apparent at first, there is a connection, albeit an oblique one.

To get to the point, guess what car that guy drives. Not a Tahoe, not a Suburban or an H2, but of all cars, a Toyota Prius. Whoa, how un-American is that? In fact, if you listen to this guy’s arguments, it makes perfect sense. His way is a million times more “American” than that of countless behemoth-on-wheels-loving suburbanites. Is Mr. Bomb-Iran so environment-conscious that he prefers to drive that gas-sipping hybrid toy over a big macho 4WD? No. He probably doesn’t give a damn about the environment or nature itself (otherwise he wouldn’t suggest chucking nuclear bombs all over the place), but his reasons are so very true.

It’s simple: drive economical, hybrid or alternative-fuel vehicles and reduce the country’s dependency on foreign oil imports. That includes the Middle East by a large margin. And that’s valid for any country that depends on oil imports. Transportation is vital to a country’s economy and oil is currently vital for transportation. Allowing a handful of countries to supply most of the fuel used by the majority of nations on this globe basically puts said nations under ransom. Cut the supply and entire economies will collapse.

This CIA guy teaches an important lesson. When deciding to buy a fuel-efficient car, you shouldn’t only consider the impact it will have on nature but also the fact that it is indeed a patriotic thing to do. So visit the Botanical Gardens, but also junk that big truck and give some love to your country.
